This is a great place to tell your story and give people more insight into who you are, what you do, and why it’s all about you.
We are Poplars Farm
Hello. We're a working farm in beautiful, sunny Leicestershire. We've been welcoming folk to the glorious big barn (self-catering holiday let made up of the old stables, grain store and workmen's digs) since 2019. It is completely unique!
We also have three brand-spanking new 'Carry on Camping' inspired Shepherds Huts (available from April). They come with king-sized beds, wood-burning stoves, comfy cushions and all the bits and bobs you'll need to scoff and quaff. There's even a wood-fired hot tub if the mood takes you!
We're close to friendly market town Melton Mowbray (rural capital of food) and gorgeous Oakham, but still hidden enough away from the hustle and bustle. If you're looking for peace and quiet, surrounded by little more than green fields and fluffy sheep then look no further. The dog's welcome too.
Poplars Farm has been in our family for decades, but hasn't been lived in since 1961! The whole place fell into disrepair and once the roof was pinched in 1993 it soon became a complete wreck. In 2012 work began to bring it back to its former glory....and it looks fabulous!
And now, as well as being able to stay with us, you can hire-out our AWESOME new events venue - The Old Cow Shed. Check it out for all wedding and party needs.....
the big barn
We champion buying local and most bits in your hamper are sourced from farmers and suppliers within Melton Mowbray and Rutland.
We do have wifi, but please bear in mind where we are - it is not superfast!
All guests are welcome to sit and relax in the courtyard. There's a BBQ if you fancy using it (can recommend a great local butcher).
Inside the Den you'll find toys, puzzles, DVDs and arts and crafts bits, so the children are covered even on a rainy day.
Your four-legged friends are welcome, but please be responsible as we are surrounded by grazing sheep and pecking hens.
Green fields as far as the eye can see. Enjoy the peace and quiet, the singing birds and the occasional bunny popping up to say hello!
We will very soon have three 'Carry on Camping' Shepherd Huts available at Poplars. Kenneth, Sid and Barbara are brand new this year (2021). They're pretty roomy with king-size beds, comfy seating, a kitchen counter, table and chairs and a small breakfast hamper with locally sourced goodies. Each has a wood-burning stove and will be available all year round.
The Huts have basic cooking facilities and kitchenware, as well as some outdoor seating and a fire-pit. Lucky campers will have use of a proper shower and compost loos, and a covered communal area with BBQ, kitchenette and plenty of seating. There's even a wood-fired hot tub available for those that fancy it!
things to do
Here's a selection of places you can visit. You are more than welcome to stay at Poplars all day, but if you're feeling adventurous...
(click on pink links for more info)
Rutland Water - The obvious choice. Rutland Water is absolutely beautiful and there are loads of things you can do there: walking, cycling, fishing, watersports. There's even an aqua park.
Belvoir Castle - Over in the Vale of Belvoir stands this 19th Century Castle, and it really is worth a visit if you like a good castle (who doesn't). You are welcome inside, to walk the gardens and woodland trails and there is the newly opened Engine Yard with lots of posh shops and cafes.
Carnegie Museum - A small but charming museum with lovely interesting exhibits of old Melton and the surrounding villages. Often have activities for children during the holidays and some excellent toilets if the need arises.
Food and Drink
This is where Melton Mowbray and Rutland come into their own. If you like your food and drink then there is lots to keep you happy...
Melton Mowbray Farmers Market - 150 years old and still going strong. See livestock go under the hammer or shop for lots of wonderful local produce from the likes of the Melton Charcuterie; Feast and Furious; Dickinson & Morris (original and best pork pies); and then wash it all down by heading to the 'end shed' and the Round Corner Brewery & tap room.
Brentingby Gin Distillery - Have a taste and treat yourself to a bottle of one of the finest gin's on the market or take a tour of the distillery.
Brockleby Pies - Buy a pie or sign up for a pie-making workshop!
Ferneleys Ice cream parlour - A dairy farm that makes its own ice-cream and its delicious! There's also a cafe, an indoor and outdoor play area and a view to die for.
Back to nature
There is a public footpath from here that takes you into Melton Mowbray, but the best local walk in our opinion is at Burrough Hill and the Iron Age Hill Fort.
Rutland Water Nature Reserve - see the wildlife and learn more about habitats around Rutland Water with guided walks/talks.
Stuff for Kids
Twin Lakes - Amusement park in Melton Mowbray. It's not Alton Towers, and the food outlets can be suspicious, but the kids love it.
Rutland Farm Park - A lovely working farm open to the public in Oakham. There's lots for the kids to get involved with, plus there's a tearoom.
National Space Centre - plenty to do here: discover 6 galleries, including the iconic Rocket Tower and the domed planetarium - crammed with space suits, rockets, satellites and meteorites. Space nerds rejoice.
Where to eat + drink
The Royal Oak - Our local in Great Dalby. Has a terrific and friendly atmosphere, great food, a children's menu, is dog friendly (their own dog Woodford is gorgeous) and has a large garden area.
The Stag and Hound - Beautiful country pub with a great selection of local beers, a weekly changing menu and award winning chef. Bit more costly, but well worth it.
Eye Kettleby Lakes - Only a short walk away across a field. It has a well stocked bar at the clubhouse open till late (check website as operates seasonal hours) and serves breakfast, lunch and tea everyday of the week.
March House Farm - About a 10 minute walk away. March House has a lovely cafe next to its butchery, deli and farm shop. They serve food from breakfast through till tea and if you order any pork/beef/lamb it's all the farm's own.
Apteekki - 100% cruelty free, plant-based menu with a focus on health, nutrition and well-being. It's delicious. Part of the Melton Wellness House and all things holistic.
